THERE is uncertainty whether Ararat’s annual Carols by Candlelight evening will proceed next month, with the organising committee yet to speak with council about staging the event.

The annual carols in the Alexandra Gardens are one of the most popular events on the local calendar and in a normal year would attract close to a thousand people.

But last year’s event had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, and the committee are unsure whether the event can or will proceed this year.

Organiser Joe Perry said he will be in contact with Ararat Rural City Council to see what might be possible.

“At present we’re in the process where we’re about to negotiate with council to see what we can do. With COVID we haven’t been able to plan anything or put anything down in concrete,” Mr Perry said.

“I can’t really say what we’re going to be doing or what we’re not going to be doing until I’ve spoken to council,” he said.

Mr Perry said his preference would be for the event to proceed.

“If it is at all possible, we would like to put something on but carols by candlelight usually takes about four or five months of planning in the background and we haven’t been able to do any of that so we will have to cram four months work into a few weeks,” Mr Perry said.

“Until I speak with council, we will make a decision after that,” he said.

Ararat’s Carols by Candlelight evening is regarded as one of the best events of its type in the region.

The evening usually comprises of traditional carols, with music played by the Ararat City Band.

The evening culminates with a giant fireworks display funded by Ararat Rural City Council.

Council Chief Executive Officer, Tim Harrison, said he would personally like to see the event proceed, but will reserve comment until after his meeting with the organising committee.
