THE $8.7 million redevelopment of Ararat Hospital is on track to be finished by mid 2022.

Victorian Health Minister, Martin Foley, visited the hospital on Tuesday to get a first hand view of the project.

The multi-million-dollar upgrade aims to expand the hospital’s theatre, radiology and pathology services, and relocate palliative care services.

Funded through the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund, the theatre redevelopment will increase East Grampians Health Service’s perioperative capability – helping to reduce waiting lists in the region.

The funding will also boost the number of day procedure beds to eight and recovery beds to four.

An upgraded Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) will also give doctors and nurses at Ararat Hospital the reusable medical equipment they need to get more people off waiting lists and into surgery.

To improve access and efficiency, Ararat Hospital’s radiology, pathology and medical imaging department is being transformed to meet increased demand and the palliative care service will be relocated, delivering greater privacy for families.

Mr Foley said the government was committed to delivering the best health services to people living outside big cities.

“Over the past two years, our hospitals and healthcare services have been at the heart of our communities, providing vital care to Victorians during the global pandemic,” Mr Foley said.

The Minister was quizzed on the recent formation of Grampians Health – a merged health service including Ballarat Base Hospital, Stawell Regional Health, Wimmera Health Care Group and Edenhope Hospital.

He said there was no pressure on other health services like East Grampians Health Service to follow suit.

“It’s completely a matter for local health services. The act stipulates those are decisions by and for health services,” he said.

“What we do know is the collaboration and partnerships that the global pandemic that has made all health services look to is an important part of how regions come together on quality provision of services and what East Grampians (Health Service) future is, is totally a matter for East Grampians Health Service,” Mr Foley said.

When asked whether funding would be provided to update facilities at the Willaura campus, the Minister was positive.

“Of course, as I understand it with both its aged care and sub-acute and acute services the priorities that will work with the health service as to where it sees the relative benefits,” he said.
