LAKE Bolac College year 12 student, Maia Ratana, has been crowned Dux, one of three students at the school to receive their scored VCE results last week.

Ms Ratana is pleased with her ATAR and is confident it is enough to get into her dream nursing course at Deakin University when offers roll around in January.

Being an individual learner, she has enjoyed the ability to work independently throughout the year when reverting to remote learning.

“It was a bit difficult, but we had to stay strong. [My peers] didn’t like that concept of it but I actually loved it. I prefer staying home and doing everything,” she said.

“I’ve always enjoyed school, even at school it was pretty fun but definitely being home was an advantage for me too.”

Lake Bolac College assistant principal, Nick Healey, congratulated Maia on her achievements.

“Maia’s teachers are thrilled for her, after seeing the effort and extra study she put in during the year pay off,” he said.

Mr Healey said their isolated students had the added hurdle of unreliable internet to navigate when forced to learn from home.

“We’re very pleased for all of our year 12s, after their entire VCE journey was disrupted by the pandemic and the added pressure of living in rural communities.”

Although only three students received an ATAR, Lake Bolac College has also had students graduate with a VCAL certificate, and others who have gone on to apprenticeships and employment.

“We believe in celebrating the success of all of our students, whatever pathway they have chosen to take, and are equally proud of our graduates that achieved their VCE or VCAL certificates and have now commenced apprenticeships or full-time employment,” Mr Healey said.

Ms Ratana thanked her parents and teachers for supporting her throughout her senior studies.

She was determined to not let the pandemic get the better of her like it has for so many.

“I had a lot of mates that didn’t quite finish so I wanted to do it for them,” she said.

“I have always wanted to do nursing because my nan used to live with us and she’s had a stroke so caring is in my nature I think.”
