ARARAT Visitor Information Centre’s (VIC) latest development, ‘Experience Ararat – Scan and Go’ encourages visitors to ditch the paper brochures and go paperless with a quick scan.

A range of tourism activities previously found within paper brochures has been digitised so users can simply scan, download and save.

According to Visitor Experience Officer Colin Driscoll, visitors are finding great value in the newly developed QR code service.

“The VIC has developed a range of tourism attractions and experiences with QR codes in place of paper brochures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to keep visitors safe in reducing contact points and paper usage,” Mr Driscoll said.

“Instead of carrying around paper brochures – we’ve complied twelve of our most popular tourist activities in the region and create one page with QR codes where visitors can easily navigate,” he said.

“When we get busy at the centre – we can encourage visitors to scan the codes quickly, it brings up the relevant website on their phone, they can save it to a file and away they go.

“As a result, we’re not having to print and hand out as many brochures and by saving attractions onto their phones, they can easily pull up the information saved if they don’t get around to visiting this time around,” he said.

Mr Driscoll said the VIC had received positive feedback from visitors.

“One couple came back to the centre to thank us for the ease of having all the information they were after at their fingertips, without a carload of brochures to worry about. Another elderly pair asked if they could download all twelve codes to keep in their Grampians file which is what we want to hear,” he said.

“It’s great to have visitors returning to the VIC, asking for more recommendations and looking to stay a couple of extra nights in our region – it’s what’s tourism is all about,” Mr Driscoll said.

Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Jo Armstrong said the Visitor Information Centre in the heart of Ararat is well placed to point guests in the direction of the best hidden gems and businesses to support.

“It’s an exciting time to visit Ararat and Council is thrilled to continue delivering more experiences that will enhance tourism and better connect people to what the region has to offer,” Cr Armstrong said.
