A SIX-year-old boy has restored faith in Ararat Dog Rescue volunteers after handing over his annual savings.<\/p>\n
Ethan McAskell saved $204 throughout 2021 and after losing his own dog, Jemma, in May, decided there was no other charity he wanted to donate to.<\/p>\n
Ethan\u2019s parents Reece and Susan introduced a three tin savings system for the youngster at the start of last year.<\/p>\n
Ethan divides any spare change his parents give him between the three tins.<\/p>\n
One tin is for Ethan\u2019s savings, another for his spending money and the third is donated to charity.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe tins teach Ethan the value of money,\u201d Mrs McAskell said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s very caring and he loved Jemma. She was 12 when she got sick in May and died.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s really missed having a dog of his own.\u201d<\/p>\n
An excited Ethan helped his father count the $204 he\u2019d saved and presented it to Ararat Dog Rescue president Jill Worrell last week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have to buy stuff for the dogs,\u201d Ethan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cDogs need food and other stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ethan is no stranger to Ararat Dog Rescue volunteers having visited the group\u2019s stall at the Ararat Market, but it was a visit to volunteers at a recent stall outside Ararat\u2019s Bendigo Bank branch that forged an alliance.<\/p>\n
Mrs Worrell admits she and other volunteers shed a few tears when Ethan told them he wanted to donate his savings to the group.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Reece and Ethan came up to us at our stall, the kindness of Ethan\u2019s heart is what got us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis kindness restored our faith in humanity and the younger generation because so many kids of his age don\u2019t give a hoot.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo see a little man like him with so much energy and happiness in him, to think of doing something like this made us cry.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ararat Dog Rescue is a non-profit group run by volunteers dedicated to rescuing dogs and replacing them in foster homes until they are adopted into their forever homes.<\/p>\n
