ARARAT RSL has confirmed it is keen to secure the ships bell and other memorabilia from HMAS Ararat when the ship is decommissioned.

The Department of Defence confirmed this week that the HMAS Ararat will be decommissioned in 2022 and harvested for spare parts.

“Decommissioning of a vessel is a significant milestone that reflects the service of the vessel and its crew through its life. A ceremony will be held in the Ship’s homeport of Darwin to celebrate HMAS Ararat’s service. A decommissioning date is expected to be confirmed in the first quarter of 2022,” a defence spokesperson said.

“No decision has been made regarding the ceremonial artefacts from HMAS Ararat but requests for long term loans can be made by writing to Director Sea Power Centre,” the spokesperson said.

Ararat RSL President, Frank Neulist, said his organisation would be keen to receive the ship’s bell or other artifacts from HMAS Ararat once it is out of service.

“We will be putting our hand up for something and yes the ship’s bell would be lovely,” he said.

“From what I can gather the decommissioning date has been put back because the new patrol boats aren’t being commissioned until September I think.”

Mr Neulist said he hopes to be invited to the HMAS Ararat decommissioning ceremony as well as the ceremony to commission its replacement, HMAS Arafura.

“The new commander of the Arafura (Cam Hooper) is a friend of mine and has local links, he served as a navigator on HMAS Ararat and this is his first full command,” Mr Neulist said.

The ceremony that decommissions a ship of the Royal Australian Navy is a time-honoured tradition that signifies the ship’s retirement from the active fleet.

Custom has established that this ceremony be formal and impressive; a solemn occasion on which the nation pauses to reflect upon the rich heritage of the ship. Decommissioning ceremonies for HMA ships are hosted by the Commander of the Australian Fleet.

The defence spokesperson told the Ararat Advocate, HMAS Ararat has provided invaluable service to Australia in the area of Border Protection.

“HMAS Ararat will be harvested for spares to sustain the remaining Fleet of Armidale Class Patrol Boats and other items returned to the Navy inventory. The ship will then be dismantled for recycling by Australian industry,” they said.

“The current crew’s positions will be transferred to the Navy’s new Evolved Cape Class Patrol Boats entering service this year with personnel to be redeployed within the Patrol Boat Force and Navy,” the spokesperson said.
