A new online survey is seeking views on how Australians\u2019 living in regional, rural or remote areas access news as part of a federal parliamentary inquiry into Australia\u2019s regional newspapers.<\/p>\n
The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts has initiated the inquiry after a number of country publications closed or were scaled back in recent years.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the past ten years news outlets in rural, regional and remote communities have closed their doors which has resulted in a substantial reduction of articles covering local issues,\u201d Committee Chair Anne Webster said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is important that we listen to our communities about what’s important to them. This survey provides an opportunity for these communities to express their views on whether the loss of their regional voice has directly affected them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI encourage anyone who lives in Australia\u2019s regional, rural or remote areas to participate in the online survey.\u201d<\/p>\n
The survey is open until 11 February 2022 and takes less than 10 minutes to complete.<\/p>\n
The Committee is continuing to accept new submissions until 28 January 2022.<\/p>\n
Publisher of the Ararat Advocate and Pyrenees Advocate, Craig Wilson, has urged readers to participate in the survey.<\/p>\n
\u201cThousands of people enjoy receiving and reading our newspapers each week and I think it is incredibly important for the government to know how important local journalism is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
