BULGANA resident Kris McMillan has had a small victory against the bureaucracy, with a pothole ridden road finally being graded this week.<\/p>\n
Kris McMillan approached the Ararat Advocate in December about the condition of Saw Pit Flat Road.<\/p>\n
The road is used by a number of people to get into Ararat, but in recent years it had become almost unusable.<\/p>\n
The road is used by people coming in and out of Ararat from places like Landsborough and Joel South and Ms McMillan feared it was a potential death trap in the fire season.<\/p>\n
The first section of the road is the responsibility of Ararat Rural City Council, with the rest coming under the management of Parks Victoria.<\/p>\n
Upon inspection it was evident the section through the state park was by far the worst.<\/p>\n
This newspaper approached Parks Victoria on Ms McMillan\u2019s behalf asking if work would be carried out on Saw Pit Flat Road to return it to a safe and useable level.<\/p>\n
Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger for the Grampians, Rhonda McNeil, replied, saying other roads could be used as an alternative.<\/p>\n
\u201cParks Victoria manages more than 2,000 kilometres of road in the Gariwerd, including the section of Saw Pit Flat Road that runs through Ararat Hills Regional Park. We prioritise road maintenance based on frequency of use and access for firefighting,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
However, this week a grader was deployed to the road and Ms McMillan said it is now vastly better.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing graded now removes the danger for everybody. It\u2019s an important access road, it\u2019s the quickest way into Ararat, a lot of people use it to come into town and I\u2019m really pleased someone has listened,\u201d Ms McMillan said.<\/p>\n
