GWMWater is working to improve the quality of the water supply to Elmhurst after a significant deterioration in recent weeks.

Residents have complained that the water coming through their taps has an odour and is discoloured, making is unusable in most households.

GWM Water says high levels of organic material have resulted in odour within the Elmhurst urban network.

Elmhurst currently receives a non-potable (non-drinking) water supply from its own local catchment.

While residents are advised not to drink the water, it is usually considered quite safe for washing and gardens.

GWMWater Managing Director Mark Williams said immediate action is being taken to provide residents with better water.

“GWMWater has engaged a contractor to clean the urban water supply network using high pressure air to remove any remaining organic material on February 16 and 17.”

“In the meantime, the storage has been bypassed and Elmhurst is being supplied directly from the weir via a settling tank. Water will be carted to the tank should weir flows cease with warmer weather. We expect that aeration of the storage will reduce and dissipate the organic material and subsequent odour issue. The storage will not be returned to service until water quality returns to normal,” Mr Williams said.

As part of GWMWater’s 2018-2023 Water Plan, Elmhurst’s water supply will be upgraded to a drinking water supply later this year.

The planned drinking water upgrade is progressing and following appointment of a contractor this month.

“The construction of a new treatment facility will address the issues causing water quality fluctuations experienced during summer,” Mr Williams said.

Member for Ripon, Louise Staley, has received numerous calls from residents about the quality of water in Elmhurst.

“I’ve had several locals contact me about the deterioration of their water. They say it is contaminated, very smelly and has been going on for several weeks,” she said.

“Clothes washing was one of the things specifically raised with me that you can no longer use the water because your clothes will come out smelling.”

“They’ve (residents) also made the point that while it is not potable, you can usually boil it which allows the water to be drunk, you certainly can’t do that at the moment,” Ms Staley said.

“I met with GWMWater last Friday and I’m very hopeful they will redouble their efforts because this has gone on for some weeks,” she said.
