THE Greens Candidate for Wannon says there is a mood for change across the electorate, with people tired of the Morrison Government and lack of progress on important issues.

Hilary McAllister has been travelling the length and breadth of the 33,595 square kilometre electorate, talking to residents about the issues important to them.

Speaking in Ararat on Wednesday, Ms McAllister was realistic about her chances of winning the seat, but said she’s determined to lift the primary vote of the Greens after a swing in 2019.

“At a minimum I guess we’re looking to improve our primary vote from the last election, it has been higher in the past, but the success of Alex Dyson’s campaign in 2019 took some votes from the Greens,” she said.

“An election is a great way to get change and more and more people want a change.”

Ms McAllister said it will be a different sort of election, with the Liberal Party now acknowledging climate change as an issue.

“With the Coalition’s climate targets, it’s clear that they (now) believe climate change is happening and that it is important.”

“With the dire impacts of climate change already affecting coastal ecosystems, agricultural districts and native forests throughout Wannon, addressing these impacts now is essential to the long-term future of the region’s farming families. The Greens are committed to pushing the next government to go further and faster to tackle the climate crisis,” she said.

Ms McAllister said a number of other issues are also on the minds of Wannon voters.

“After speaking to a lot of the Wannon locals, things like housing affordability and availability is a big issue. For years we’ve been wanting to move out of the cities into regional centres but if there is nowhere for them to live it makes it very difficult,” she said.

32-year-old Ms McAllister is the co-founder of grassroots not-for-profit For Wild Places, and grew up on a broadacre sheep and wheat farm in North-Western Victoria.

“Both major parties have let them (voters) down, and we are out of time. I intend to be a bold and inspirational advocate for people throughout our diverse community; to amplify their voices, and fight for a better future for all constituents.”

At the 2019 election, the Greens received 6,590 votes of 6.3% of the vote.
