IDENTICAL twin sisters Beverley Whiting and Suzanne North have plenty of reasons to smile this week, celebrating their 70th birthday with family and friends.

Beverley and Suzanne were born on the 19th of January, 1952 at Wimmera Base Hospital in Horsham and grew up at Dadswells Bridge.

They were the oldest in a family of six children with three other sisters and a brother.

“We were both a couple of tomboys. We grew up on the farm at Dadswells Bridge and we used to be outside making cubby houses and everything else. Mum didn’t like us in the house. Mum said we were pretty lively,” Beverley said with a smile.

“Mums mother, our grandmother had us for a while for a holiday and she ended up having to tie us up. That’s how active we were,” she said.

The sisters say they have always been close, but admit they had a few disagreements when they were younger.

“We have our moments, we’re not too bad, but when we were younger we had a few fights,” Beverley said.

The sisters even followed the same career path.

Suzanne started nurse training the day man landed on the moon in 1969 and Beverley followed in her sisters footsteps a year later.

Suzanne said they had followed each other to Ararat and were lucky because their husbands were both friends.

“We’ve followed each other everywhere. My partner is Beverley’s husband’s best friend. It’s funny, we seem to have followed each other around,” Suzanne said.

The sisters say they get along really well.

“We ring each other every day. We see each other almost every day and we share a lot of interests like cooking and gardening,” Beverley said.

Religion is also a big part of their lives, although they both attend different churches.

“I’m a Lutheran but Jim my partner is a Catholic so I go with him because he recons otherwise he’s be sitting on his own,” Suzanne said.

Suzanne was also quick to point out that she is the younger sister.

“I was half an hour behind Beverley when we were born. So she is my older sister,” she said.

Beverley and Suzanne started their week of birthday celebrations last Saturday with a party at home in Ararat.

“Saturday (tomorrow) is our real birthday and Beverley and I are going for high tea at the Stawell Railway Station, that’ll be a treat. There are 15 coming,” Suzanne said.

Beverley has recently become a grandmother for the first time while her sister Suzanne has four grandchildren.
