AFTER a lengthy investigation, Ararat Rural City Council has named Pomonal Estate vineyard as the destination for the municipalities new farmers market.

Last July, council received $30,000 from the Victorian Government to establish a farmers market in the region.

At the time, council CEO Tim Harrison said he wanted the market to be established in one of the smaller towns surrounding Ararat.

On Wednesday, Dr Harrison visited Pomonal Estate to confirm they would be the ongoing hosts of a monthly farmers market.

He said the grant money received by council will be used to plan and promote the new market.

“This is stimulus money coming out of COVID and it’s a great opportunity for Pep and Adam from Pomonal Estate to develop the market, it will assist with promotion and someone to help with the day to day issues as the market kicks off,” Dr Harrison said.

“The person who we engage to work with Pep and Adam will provide that additional resource, to bring people in from further afield and promote the market.”

“I think we’ve all seen the benefits farmers markets have for communities. We see the Clunes Farmers Market, the Talbot Market, we want to have Pomonal Market on the map in the same way,” Dr Harrison said.

Pep Atchison from Pomonal Estate was delighted with the news.

“Being the President of East Grampians Tourism Association, we wanted to create an artisan food market because there are so many producers in the region. I’ve got the venue, I’ve got the space so it’s a good way to support each other and showcase the region in one spot,” Ms Atchison said.

“It will be a fun, family friendly market with some live music, something for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

“This (farmers market) is what people want. They want fresh produce.”

“I’ve got a big venue here. 20 acres so we can take a lot of stalls and a lot of people,” Ms Atchison said.

Dr Harrison believes the tranquillity of Pomonal Estate, surrounded by the Grampians and grape vines, will ensure the new market is an instant success.

“We’ve come up with what I think is the right location for what will be the region’s premier farmers market.”

“Pretty soon people will be asking, where’s Talbot,” Dr Harrison said.

Labor Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, said the grant is part of a $10 million investment in more than 50 projects through the Government’s Regional Recovery Fund.

“With the funding for this project, the council aims to engage a local marketing expert to develop a successful sustainable Farmer’s Market for the Ararat Rural City Municipality and to assist in the development of a business plan in engagement of the rural farm participants to highlight the farm to plate produce available in the region,” she said.
