AFTER a five year absence, Ararat’s Holy Trinity Anglican Church is celebrating the appointment of a new priest.

Father Martin Nadarajan was inducted at a ceremony last Thursday attended by the local congregation and clergy from across Western Victoria.

Father Nadarajan was first ordained as a deacon in 2017 and began as a non-stipendiary Assistant Curate at The Anglican Cathedral in Ballarat and Holy Trinity in Sebastopol.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 2019.

Father Nadarajan told the Advocate, he was keen to get members of the community back to the church.

“In the next few months, I am trying to see whether we can take the church back to the community because the community and the church, because of various reasons, fell apart fell apart because of abuse and everything,” he said.

“The congregation here has not had a priest for five years so what I’m trying to do is start again from ground zero trying to establish the liturgy back.”

In addition to the regular Sunday morning service, Father Nadarajan is keen to re-establish things like Sunday School, the church choir, a church fete, pizza night for younger members and a jazz festival.

“All of that is in the pipeline. I’ve got a lot of ideas in my mind right now and I’m just one week old, I’ll put them all on my ideas board and then we’ll work them through as we go,” Father Nadarajan said.

“The main thing I’ve go to do right now is get to know the community, what are their needs, what do they have.”

“We are not a dull group at all. People think that church is about coming in, having communion and leaving and we’re more than that.”

Father Nadarajan is a Malaysian-Indian by birth and speaks four different languages.

“I arrived in Australia in 2006 on an international work assignment. After a successful stint in Australia, I decided to stay and eventually became a citizen,” he said.

He worked for several international companies including DHL Worldwide, Drake International and Mercer Super Trust for over 25 years Before “responding to God’s call”.

“I am an ardent believer in working in the mission field of God in a collaborative manner.”

Father Nadarajan said he has received a warm welcome since arriving in Ararat.

“I came to Ararat twice on a visit and I though it is quite Anglo, and then I walked around and met people and realised Ararat is really quite cosmopolitan and the people in the church are so friendly. It’s like I have known everyone for a long time,” he said.

Father Nadarajan conducts a 9.30am service each Sunday at Holy Trinity Church in Ararat as well as monthly services in Great Western and Willaura.
