ARARAT Rural City Council has moved quickly to address an outbreak of blue green algae in Alexandra Lake.

In recent weeks, numerous complains have been made to council about the condition and smell of the lake following evaporation over the summer months and high nutrient load.

Council CEO Tim Harrison told the Ararat Advocate, a number of measures are being adopted to restore the lake to good health.

He said a council crew commenced excavation works around the lake last Friday to allow water to flow more freely.

“There’s heaps of algal bloom in the lake at this stage and that’s due in part to some water being trapped in some areas of the lake. We’ve done some dredging work to clear that out near the island, so there will be better water flow. We’ve also been trucking in fresh water to replenish the lake,” Dr Harrison said.

“We’re also about to invest in three new fountains for the lake. They’re actually aerators but look just like fountains and they’ll be there to aerate the water and hopefully promote a healthier lake,” he said.

Dr Harrison said the lake experiences varying levels of algae in the summer months, but this year has been particularly bad.

“Every year it gets some algal bloom, but it has been quite severe this time around, there has been extra nutrient load coming into the lake.”

“The lake needs better aeration and I think it is important we keep that up and keep monitoring the situation,” Dr Harrison said.

“What’s been happening in the warmer months there is quite a bit of evaporation, the water warms up and provides the ideal conditions for algal bloom to occur,” he said.

“A good drop of rain will flush things through.”

Dr Harrison said council appreciates all feedback from the community regarding the Lake via council’s website or switchboard.
