MARION College student Jayde McMurtrie has earnt his place in the Lions Australia V201 Youth of the Year District Final.<\/p>\n
One of five students from across the region, Jayde made it to the district final after winning the Regional Final at Mortlake in March.<\/p>\n
The Lions Australia Youth of the Year is a national competition that begins locally at club level and winners advance to competitions at regional, district, state and national levels.<\/p>\n
Jayde initially competed locally at the Lions Club of Ararat Final in November.<\/p>\n
At each level of competition, students must participate in an interview where they are encouraged to talk about their school and community activities as well their interests and hobbies.<\/p>\n
This is followed by a public speaking component at which they present two impromptu speeches and a five minute prepared speech.<\/p>\n
Jayde, who lives in Moyston, spoke passionately about the importance of junior cricket in rural communities and the dwindling opportunities for children and young people who want to take up the sport.<\/p>\n
The District Final was hosted by the Lions Club of Casterton.<\/p>\n
The overall winner was Gevindu Wickramanayake from Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School who will advance to the Victorian Final.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
