ARARAT\u2019s Edith Cavell memorial has recently undergone a facelift after local residents complained of its \u201cshabby\u201d condition.<\/p>\n
The memorial and reserve, located at the corner Barkly Street and Viewpoint Street, was erected by the Mothers Club of the State School Ararat in 1931.<\/p>\n
It commemorates Edith Cavell , an English nurse who was executed by a German firing squad in Belgium on 12 October, 1915.<\/p>\n
Edith Louisa Cavell was nursing in Belgium during WW1.<\/p>\n
She was based in a clinic in Brussels where she cared for wounded soldiers of both sides of the conflict.<\/p>\n
She also organised escape routes for captured French, British and Belgium soldiers.<\/p>\n
By 1915, the German secret police had began to suspect her and eventually she was arrested.<\/p>\n
She was accused of treason, found guilty and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. Cavell was 49 at the time of the execution.<\/p>\n
Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage.<\/p>\n
Following Cavell\u2019s death, many memorials were created around the world to remember her, including the one in Ararat.<\/p>\n
The Ararat State School Mothers Club decided to erect the memorial to \u201cregister their disgust at this atrocity\u201d<\/p>\n
The club then embarked on fund raising activities to raise 152 pounds ($304) to cover the cost of the memorial that was erected on the reserve in 1931.<\/p>\n
In 2003, the reserve underwent restoration work, however in recent years has looked somewhat shabby and unloved.<\/p>\n
Council were quick to act, with works being undertaken at the memorial in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
Council CEO Tim Harrison said the memorial was an important part of Ararat\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Edith Cavell memorial is an important reminder of the life and heroism of an inspirational woman. Council has recently undertaken some work on the memorial, replacing the lighting and painting the memorial itself.
