THREE remarkable Ararat couples this week celebrated something quite remarkable.

Lawrie And Val Tonkin, Kaye and Mervyn Fox and Joy and Max Cronin all celebrated their 60th (diamond) wedding anniversaries, which Mayor Jo Armstrong said was an event worth celebrating.

“To have one couple celebrate their 60th anniversary is quite special, but three couples in the one week is really quite extraordinary,” Cr Armstrong said.

Kaye and Mervyn Fox and Joy and Max Cronin were married on the 14th of April, 1962, while Lawrie and Val Tonkin married on the 21st of April, 1962.

The Ararat Advocate managed to get the three couples together in Alexandra Gardens on Wednesday for a photograph and the presentation of a certificate and flowers for their diamond anniversary.

All three couples were clearly still very much in love and all said they’d “do it all again”.

“It’s exceptionally rare and incredibly special to be able to be a part of celebrating with these three couples,” Cr Armstrong said.

“I think what a great testament to partnership. It’s just really lovely hearing every one of you say you’d do it all again in a jiffy,” Cr Armstrong said.

Kaye and Mervyn Fox reflected on a full life together.

“Like every married couple, we have had our highs and lows, but rearing five children and involvement in sport, mainly football and tennis has kept us on our toes,” they said.

“More recently, we have been kept busy with eight grandchildren and golf.”

Joy and Max Cronin were married at St Andrews church in Ararat and continue to live in town.

“We’ve lived in Ararat all our married life,” they said.

“We have three children, eight grandchildren and now two great grandchildren.”

Lawrie and Val Tonkin met at a tennis tournament and married four years later in Marnoo.

They lived in Donald where Lawrie worked as an engineer and Val as a home economics teacher.

“We then moved to Marnoo for a short time then purchased the Tatyoon General Store in 1968, then to Ballarat and Donald to retire.”

In 2002, the couple moved to Ararat to help care for their two granddaughter in Buangor.
