A large gathering of about 100 people attended the ANZAC Day commemoration activities at Lake Bolac.

Friends of the Lake Bolac RSL President, Gerard Morrissey, welcomed the crowd and conducted a flag ceremony, Last Post and invitation to the community to lay wreaths in respect of those who sacrificed their lives and livelihoods during war.

The group then moved to the unveiling of the new Cowaugh Estate memorial bluestone plaque in honour of the 12 WWI Soldier Settlers of the Lake Bolac district.

This plaque was commissioned by the Lake Bolac and District Historical Society, as the contribution of soldier settlers had never been formally recognised by the community.

Now the society is proud to have finally brought it the recognition it deserves.

The new memorial is located within the existing war memorial site and was unveiled by Lake Bolac resident Andrew Robertson, a grandson of soldier settler John “Jack” Robertson.

People then moved into the Soldier’s Memorial Hall to enjoy speeches, songs and a poignant but positive address given by highly decorated Australian Army representative, Ben Andrew.

Ben shared his experiences of many tours of duty to places such as East Timor and Afghanistan.

Lake Bolac Historical Society President, Colin McKenzie gave a brief account of the 100 Years of Soldier Settlement and the forthcoming 100 years anniversary of the opening of the Lake Bolac Soldiers Memorial Hall in 1922.

The Red Cross ladies prepared lunch and afterwards a bus tour with commentary of the Cowaugh Estate Soldier Settlement farm sites was enjoyed by descendants and community members.
