A large crowd attended ANZAC Day commemorations in Willaura, which began with a 9am Stand To at the Cenotaph.

Children from the Willaura Kindergarten and Willaura Primary School took part, and then the Hamilton Pipe Band led a march to the Memorial Hall for the service there.

Guest Speaker, Pam Cupper OAM, spoke movingly of the loss of young men on the World War 1 battlefields.

She noted specifically the experiences of several from Willaura who enlisted, only to lose their lives in Gallipoli and France, and remain forever buried in unmarked graves.

Mrs Cupper pointed out that in fact, of the fourteen WW1 names on the Willaura Cenotaph, only six have a known burial site.

Mrs Cupper then spoke of the anguish of families at home as they clung to the hope that their boys might be found, only to hear sometimes twelve months or so later that they were killed in action, rather than simply missing.

Mrs Cupper explained the role of the Red Cross Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau, whose volunteers worked tirelessly to reconnect the families with their loved ones.

“Even with all the best efforts of the searchers of the Australian Red Cross and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission,18,000 Australians who died in the first World War have no known grave,” she said.
