A local woman has been hailed a \u201chero\u201d for bravely venturing into Alexandra Lake on Wednesday night to save a trapped cygnet.<\/p>\n
A call was put out on the Ararat Residents Page at 4.45pm on Wednesday that a cygnet was trapped in fishing line near the island.<\/p>\n
Several residents made frantic calls to council, Wildlife Victoria and animal rescue organisations for help, but none was available.<\/p>\n
That prompted local Sarah Day and a friend to turn up at the lake with a kayak and venture into the lake in the dark to save the bird.<\/p>\n
Ms Day told the Advocate yesterday she couldn\u2019t sit back and do nothing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was watching the post last night thinking I\u2019ve got kids home, I really can\u2019t go and do anything, but then council never showed up and Wildlife Victoria never showed up so I went to my mates place and grabbed his kayak and we went and helped,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe cygnet was caught around its wing with fishing line and when he was freed he went straight back to his family.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe help wildlife where we can but not normally swans, I\u2019m terrified of them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMum and day were pretty scary, they came over and were very unhappy but when (the cygnet) was free they were pretty chilled out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was pretty dark,\u201d Ms Day said.<\/p>\n
Her brave actions received a wave of praise from local residents on the Ararat Residents Page.<\/p>\n
\u201cSarah you are amazing and have gone above and beyond. Thank you so much just doesn\u2019t seem enough,\u201d one person wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou bloody legend,\u201d said another.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re a legend Sarah Day. Thank you from all of us daily garden walkers,\u201d another woman said.<\/p>\n
