Bernard to contest November poll
ARARAT resident Bernard Quince has announced his intention to run as an independent candidate in November’s election, but admits he can’t win.
Mr Quince – a former school teacher and passionate regular letter writer to the Advocate – says he has a simple reason for standing as a candidate in the Ripon electorate.
“I know I won’t win. I can’t win. I don’t have a budget, a following or policies. Hell, I don’t even have faith in myself.
“But if I don’t stand, I can’t criticise others for not standing,” he said.
Election promise for neighbourhood houses
MEMBER for Ripon Louise Staley says neighbourhood houses will receive recurrent funding and greater certainty if the Liberal Nationals Coalition wins November’s election.
Ms Staley visited Ararat Neighbourhood House on Monday to outline the coalitions funding promise.
She said the commitment will end the uncertainty in the sector created by the current government and will guarantee the future of Victoria’s neighbourhood houses.
Petition seeks support for walking track
PEOPLE who support plans for a walking track all the way around Green Hill Lake are urged to sign a petition seeking funding for the project.
The Green Hill Lake Development Board has embarked on an ambitious project to construct a seven kilometre walking track around the entire lake.
Currently, the walking track only covers about half the lake, preventing walkers, runners and cyclists from doing the entire circle.

Big progress on rail upgrade
THE upgrade of the railway line between Ararat and Maryborough is nearing completion, with 80 kilometres of track being replaced.
Local residents would have seen crews working along the line in recent months.
The line between Ararat and Maryborough has been problematic since the Murray Basin Rail Project was completed.
The use of old railway tracks – some 100 years old – meant speeds on the section of line were dramatically reduced.
Seriously Shiraz returns to J Ward
FANS of the Grampians’ signature peppery reds will descend on Ararat this Father’s Day weekend as Seriously Shiraz returns with a bang on Saturday 3rd September, the first time the event has been held since 2019.
The leading event that will officially kick off the Grampians Wine Festival held all month long, Seriously Shiraz invites visitors to discover the region’s award-winning Shiraz through tastings and winemaker masterclasses, alongside renowned local produce and unmissable live music.
After a two-year hiatus, it will be the perfect day out to support the Grampians’ distinguished wineries and winemakers.
Hosted at the iconic J Ward Museum in Ararat, the one-day event will showcase a variety of some of the best Shiraz and other Grampians wines from the region with wine tastings available from 12 noon until 4pm and glass or bottle purchases available from 4-5pm.
New Doctor for Lake Bolac
After many years without a regular doctor, the Lake Bolac Bush Nursing Centre welcomed Dr Pushparani Ravindranayagam to their team of health professionals yesterday.
Dr Pushpa works from the Beaufort Medical Practice and will run a clinic each Thursday at Lake Bolac.
Lake Bolac Bush Nursing Centre CEO, Jan Milliken, was excited to announce the appointment.
“It has been a long process and years of negotiations to obtain a doctor for our district,” she said.
